Clippers lose to Eagles, fall to sixth place

NANAIMO — The Clippers seven game winning streak came to an end with a 4-2 loss to the Surrey Eagles.

With the setback in their final regular season contest Nanaimo will finish in sixth place in the Coastal Division standings.

The Clippers never led in the game trailing 1-0 after the first period and sitting tied at 2-2 through 40 minutes.

Tanner Bruender and Anthony Biakabutuka scored both of Nanaimo’s goals in the second period.

Surrey had tallies from Carter Frankiw and Jagjeevan Phangura in the first two periods and Sihwan Kim and Miles Burgin scored in the third.

The Clippers outshot Surrey 32-24 while going 0/3 on the man advantage and killing off their only penalty against.

It was the final regular season game in the junior careers of Chazz Nixon, James Johnson, Luke Lavery, Cole Lonsdale and Dylan Kinch.

Those players along with captain Connor DeTurris were recognized before the game.

Nanaimo finished the regular season with a record of 29-21-4, in sixth place in the Coastal Division.

They will battle the Cowichan Valley Capitals in a playoff series for the first time since 2009 in round one of the post season.

Game 1 is likely to take place Friday, Apr. 4 in Duncan.
