NANAIMO — The 45th general election, scheduled for April 28, is poised to be contested among some very familiar faces to local voters.

The riding of Nanaimo-Ladysmith is set to feature many returning candidates from the 2021 vote, which saw the NDP’s Lisa Marie Barron claim a narrow victory over Conservative candidate Tamara Kronis.

Both will return for their respective parties in 2025.

Also listed as a candidate for the Green Party of Canada is Paul Manly, who finished a close third behind Barron and Kronis in 2021, and is a current City of Nanaimo councillor.

Liberal candidate Michelle Corfield, who placed fourth in 2021, and Stephen Welton from the People’s Party of Canada (PPC), who finished fifth last time out, are also declared to run for their respective parties.

Voter turnout in the riding was 64 per cent in 2021, a decrease over the 2019 election when nine candidates were on the ballot.

In Courtenay-Alberni, which also represents Nanoose Bay, Parksville and Qualicum, NDP incumbent Gord Johns is planning to run again and seek a fourth term in Ottawa.

The Conservatives announced Kris McNicol as their candidate for the riding in October, an Oceanside resident for over 30 years.

Chris Markevich will run for the Green Party.

Candidates have until 2 p.m. on April 9 to declare their candidacy and be included on a riding’s ballot.

Advance voting will happen between April 18 to 21, with eligible voters able to register for a mail ballot by April 22.
