Fire along Island Hwy. destroys Parksville business

PARKSVILLE — No injuries, but considerable damage was sustained to a local business early Monday morning.

Shortly before 6 a.m. on Monday, March 10, Parksville Fire Rescue crews were called to a business in the 200 block of the Island Hwy. East, between Corfield St. and Weld St., after smoke and flames were seen from the ground floor of a building.

Assistant fire chief Mike Tisdale told NanaimoNewsNOW four engines and 23 firefighters arrived on scene and found the fire had spread throughout the single-storey building and up into the roof.

“Our aerial truck worked the rear of the structure, and with the fire being in the truss space, it was difficult as we found multiple roofs in the structure. So there was a T-bar and some drywall [and] plywood up on the ceiling, so it made it a little difficult for the crews to access right away.”

Tisdale added the building was vacant at the time and no injuries were reported.

Damage from the fire was largely contained to the one building.

“There was significant fire, smoke and water damage in the structure…minor water infiltration under the neighboring occupancy door.”

A cause of the fire has yet to be determined, with fire investigators on scene on Monday.

“The building was secured, we will be doing the fire investigation, and other than that, we just have to wait for insurance companies to do what they have to do.”

Smoke was visible through much of the city, with some lanes on the Island Hwy. blocked for a couple of hours as crews worked on site.
