Snowy start to February made for a chilly month in Nanaimo
NANAIMO — It started cold and ended wet.
That was the summary of the weather across much of the mid-Island last month, with a cold snap dumping snow across much of the central Island region at the start of February before giving way to warmer temperatures and regular rain showers by the end.
Colin Fong, meteorologist with Environment Canada, said when the Arctic air moved out of the region mid-month, it was like someone flipped a switch, with temperatures climbing to near or above-normal conditions.
“We began to see weather system come in from the Pacific Ocean again. Because they’re coming in from the relatively warm ocean, these systems brought in milder air into B.C. to help pump up those temperatures. These mild temperatures are something that we are continuing to experience.”
