Clippers win 7th straight, shutout Kings

NANAIMO — Make it seven straight wins for the Nanaimo Clippers as they dispatched the visiting Powell River Kings by a 3-0 score at Frank Crane Arena.

In the seventh meeting between the two teams, held Friday, Feb. 14, both Nanaimo and Powell River playing a relatively even opening period with shots narrowly favouring the Clippers 10-7.

An early powerplay in the second period for the Clippers got them on the board as Cole Lonsdale cashed in for his 21st goal of the season, assisted by Luke Lavery and Garin Ludwig for a 1-0 lead.

Nanaimo traded penalties through the rest of the period with Powell River, skating to the second break with a 1-0 lead.

Shots favoured the Clippers 24-13 after 40 minutes.

The game stayed 1-0 until late in the third period, when captain Connor DeTurris scoring the insurance goal with assists from Lonsdale and Dylan Kinch.

Julian Brown scored his first goal of the year, into the empty net, with just over a minute remaining to make it 3-0.

The Clippers poured on 25 shots on goal in the third period, putting 49 on net throughout the game en route to the victory.

Vladimir Nikitin stopped all 18 shots to improve to 5-0 in the BCHL this season, earning first star honours in the process.

The win is Nanaimo’s 21st of the season, improving their record to 21-18-2-0 and pulling them within a point of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs for sixth place in the Coastal Conference.

Nanaimo hosts Prince George on Saturday, Feb. 15, a 7 p.m. puck drop.
