‘Ok, I won’t argue with that:’ speeding ‘influencer’ caught, vehicle impounded after Lantzville traffic stop

NANAIMO — An evening joyride on a date night in Lantzville proved to be a costly outing for a self-described “influencer”.

A yellow Nissan GT-R was seen by an unmarked B.C. Highway Patrol vehicle rapidly accelerating from the Hwy. 19 and Ware Rd. intersection on Sunday, Feb. 2 at around 6 p.m., a move which caught the officer’s attention.

Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said the officer was quick to use his speed radar equipment, and clocked the vehicle going 150 kilometres per hour in the 90 zone, with the whole interaction caught on camera.

“This Nissan GT-R driver identified himself as a YouTube influencer and actually recorded the interaction with our officer, which is perfectly fine. We explained that going that quickly gets you an excessive speeding ticket, 150 in a 90 zone, and of course a seven day impound.”

The vehicle was loaded carefully onto a flat-bed tow truck, to be impounded for seven days. (YouTube)

In video posted by the offender to his YouTube channel, captioned “showing off gone wrong”, the responding officer can be heard describing the traffic stop to the offender.

“I heard you first coming off the light, just wide open,” the officer said. “I didn’t turn my radar on…I just waited for you to blow right by me, I grabbed your speed at 150 and watched it continue, you probably hit 170 or more but I don’t have that reading, than chased you down.”

Once showed the proof by the officer, the 29-year-old offending driver said: “Okay, I won’t argue with that.”

The driver was issued a ticket for $368 under the Motor Vehicle Act, while the vehicle was towed and impounded for an automatic seven days.

Police noted the driver and his date remained polite through the interaction and were cooperative as the vehicle was loaded onto a flat-bed tow truck.

“The cop has been very, very respectful, caring and this tow truck driver has been very helpful and making sure I’ve got everything I need,” the offender said while documenting the incident. “I will say it is a bit of a bummer, but at the same time I’ve got a couple of other vehicles at home so we’ll be fine for the week.”

He said in the video he plans to move to Kelowna in the next week.

In the final shot of the video, the man and his date can be seen smiling and laughing with each other in the back of the B.C. Highway Patrol cruiser.

The man and his date were driven to a nearby Tim Horton’s by the officer, as they awaited a ride from the man’s mother who was travelling down from Black Creek to pick them up.
