Frosty mornings causing slick conditions for Nanaimo motorists

NANAIMO — While it’s not the blast of winter some Canadian drivers in other provinces are currently experiencing, frosty conditions Monday morning still require cautious driving on the mid-Island.

Road Safety at Work is reminding drivers to take care as temperatures dip below the freezing point overnight providing frosty and at times slippery conditions for the Monday morning commute.

The agency’s Trace Acres said even though the Nanaimo and Oceanside areas have yet to see a big dump of snow or consistent below-zero conditions for multiple days, frost forming on roadways and sidewalks overnight can still lead to some unexpected slippery conditions in the morning.

“As we know in the winter time, many times the conditions are not ideal. So speed is really one of the key things. We encourage everyone to make sure that they drive to the conditions, not always what the speed limit sign says on the side of the road.”

With Environment Canada predicting temperatures to hover around the freezing mark overnight for most of this week, Acres said it’s important to keep those changing conditions in mind whenever you’re on the road.

He said to ensure your vehicle has some simple emergency items like water, snacks and warm clothing in case of an emergency.

“Do you have the right kind of tires for the driving you are going to be doing? You don’t want to bulk up on clothing while you’re driving because that could restrict your movement and cause some problems, so lots of little things to think about.”
