Lane closures scheduled to install highway barriers near Cathedral Grove

NANAIMO — Long-awaited safety improvements along Hwy. 4 west of Oceanside are being installed beginning this weekend.

Crews will be on site along Hwy. 4 near Cathedral Grove for two nights of work on Sunday, Jan. 26, and Monday, Jan. 27 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. both days, focusing on an approximately 200-metre span of the highway, on the western side of the park.

Single-lane alternating traffic will be in place during those hours to provide workers space to install concrete roadside barriers along the highway shoulders.

“…barriers will be placed on each side of the highway shoulder through the existing no parking areas of Cathedral Grove to reduce ongoing safety challenges faced by drivers and pedestrians when vehicles are illegally parked along the highway during heavy tourist seasons,” the province noted in a release.

It’s hoped the barriers will deter illegal parkers and make the, at-times, narrow highway a safer one to navigate for drivers and pedestrians.

The province said drivers travelling through the area during work times should expect delays and allow extra time as a result.

Traffic control personnel will be on scene directing vehicles.

Over-width vehicles are able to travel through during the construction, provided they have proper permits and have provided advance notice, according to the province.

Any changes to the schedule will be published on the DriveBC website.
