POWELL RIVER — The Clippers built a pair of two goal leads but couldn’t hang on in a 7-4 loss in Powell River.

Nanaimo opened scoring six minutes into the game on a wrist shot by Tanner Bruender.

The marker was his first with the team.

Powell River countered on a long distance power play shot from Eli Friedman.

Despite being outshot 17-9 in the opening period the score ended up 1-1 thanks to the strong goaltending work of Clippers netminder Chazz Nixon.

Cole Lonsdale and Callas Pierce put Nanaimo up 3-1 early in the middle frame and from there the teams traded second period tallies.

Marek Beaudoin narrowed the gap for the Kings before Connor DeTurris responded with a rebound on the man advantage.

Brendan Giles moved the score to 4-3 Clippers with just under three minutes remaining.

The third period started with another Beaudoin goal 26 seconds in and then Noah Samanski notched the game winner midway through.

Two empty netters gave the Kings the victory.

The final shots were 35-34 for the Clippers with Nanaimo going 1/2 on the power play and 2/3 killing penalties.

Clipper forward Luke Lavery played in his 200th career game and recorded one assist.

Nanaimo and Powell play again on Jan. 25 at Hap Parker Arena at 5 p.m.
