NANOOSE BAY — One person died following a collision on Hwy. 19 at Northwest Bay Rd.

The incident was reported to Oceanside RCMP on Friday, Jan 3 at 7 a.m. and involved a pedestrian hit by vehicle in the highway’s southbound lanes, stated BC Highway Patrol RCMP Cpl. Michelle LeBrun.

She stated the pedestrian, a 61-year-old Nanoose Bay man, left the Petro-Canada service station and crossed Northwest Bay Rd. and then attempted to cross the highway.

“Early indications are that he didn’t have the right-of-way, he was crossing against a green light,” Cpl. LeBrun told NanaimoNewsNOW, who noted the man was hit by a lone pickup truck.

Cpl. LeBrun noted the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing at the time.

The driver of the truck remained on scene and cooperated with police, while several other motorists are assisting with their investigation, Cpl. LeBrun noted.

“Everybody remained on scene and had an opportunity to speak to police, we’re still combing through all of the information and evidence that we have.”

Cpl. LeBrun said any other witnesses with information who haven’t already spoken to police are encouraged to do so.

Single-lane alternating traffic was in place in both directions for several hours as a result of the incident.
