The City of Port Alberni’s unionized workers have voted overwhelmingly in favour of job action.

At their November 4th meeting, CUPE Local 118’s 200 members voted 96% in favour of a strike.

CUPE local president Stacy Wotton said they’ve been without a contract for more than a year, and are looking for better wages and working conditions.

“We’re not really getting anywhere. We’re stuck on working conditions and wages for all of the employees and so we have applied for essential services through the labour board and we are looking for a mediation date,” she said. “We hope to get back to the table, that is our hope. We always want to be able to negotiate, we just want a fair deal. We want to do our jobs and we want to serve the taxpayers and we just want to be able to do that without any job interruption.”
