NANAIMO — An eight-year-old boy is in hospital after he was hit by a vehicle in a school parking lot shortly before classes started Tuesday morning.

Nanaimo RCMP said the incident occurred just after 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 17 in the parking lot of the Discovery Montessori School at 3460 Jingle Pot Rd.

RCMP Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said multiple people witnessed the incident and spoke with RCMP, along with paramedics from B.C. Emergency Health Services.

“The youth was taken to local hospital with serious injuries, the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, and the investigation is continuing.”

A statement from school principal Cynthia Dyer, obtained by NanaimoNewsNOW, said a car backed into a student at the school.

“There were three adults on scene with medical background and first aid was administered until the ambulance arrived.”

She added more information about the student’s condition will be shared with the school community when appropriate.

The parking lot remains closed as police conduct their investigation, while teachers are staying with a handful of students who are remaining in school for the day.

“This is one of the most terrifying things to happen to a child, a parent, a community and it affects us all in different ways,” Dyer added. “I strongly urge everyone to stay strong for our children and to reach out to one another for conversation, huge or solace.

Traffic was slowed along Jingle Pot Rd. directly in front of the school as emergency services attended.

Discovery Montessori School is an independent school and child care facility, with a focus on hand-on, self-directed learning.
