Pop-up recycling contract extended in Parksville

“I believe the politicians are all very happy that we took it on because they were getting a lot of phone calls from a lot of people asking why they didn’t have that service in our community,” Round told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Between the end of February 2020 and May 2023, there was no Oceanside area location to dispose of core post-use recycling items, with the closest depots being in Nanaimo, Port Alberni.

Round estimated each recycling event sees 150 to 200 vehicles into their self-contained leased site, with volunteers helping with guiding traffic and item disposal.

“People are coming a lot more organized, which also makes it quicker for us to drop their products off and then the volume isn’t so great because they haven’t been collecting it for years.”

Round said their organization hopes to become a permanent service eventually, stating Recycle BC is pleased with their arrangement.

“We’re working on it with Recycle BC to become more of a traditional site, that’s what we want to do, we’ like doing this, we’re doing a good service for the community,” Round said.

PCCS takes great pride in helping the community, preserving the environment and keeping recyclables out of the landfill, Round noted.
