Icy conditions on Nanaimo highway sends one person to hospital

NANAIMO — Police are advising drivers to take extra time and use caution on area roads after a multi-vehicle crash.

Three vehicles were involved in an incident along the Trans-Canada Highway, south of the Cedar Rd. turnoff and Nanaimo Parkway junction on Sunday, Dec. 15 just before 8 a.m.

Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said the driver of a Ford F-350 lost control down the hill.

“Their vehicle struck the barrier, then a second vehicle came by shortly after which also slid into that barrier. There was a lot of debris on the highway, a third vehicle was struck by the debris also,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

The driver of the second vehicle involved, a grey Nissan, sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for observation.

Both the driver of the pickup truck and the third vehicle involved, a Honda CRV, were uninjured, according to O’Brien.

Police, Nanaimo Fire Rescue and BC Emergency Health Services personnel were on scene for around three hours tending to the drivers and clearing the roadway, with a lane in each direction closed during that time.

O’Brien said this time of year is a challenging one for drivers with changing weather conditions.

“It’s a good reminder for the public to be aware of the road conditions.”

The season’s first snowfall came in some areas of the central Island on Monday, Dec. 16 with wet flurries reported through multiple areas of Nanaimo and Oceanside, with more substantial snowfall at higher elevations.

Rainfall and wet snow is possible through much of the week with a series of storms due to hit the region.
