Grizzlies spoil Clippers’ teddy bear toss night

NANAIMO — Fans only had to wait around 10 minutes to send bears flying at Frank Crane Arena Saturday night, but the joy was short-lived.

The Nanaimo Clippers hosted the Victoria Grizzlies on Saturday, Dec. 14, the team’s annual teddy bear toss game.

Dylan Kinch got the big goal, on the powerplay, as the Clippers got out to a 1-0 lead just past the midway mark of the first period. Cole Lonsdale and Anthony Biakabatuka assisted on the play.

The long break however, as the bears were cleaned up, gave Victoria an opportunity to regroup.

Two goals from the Grizzlies before the period was up, including one from former Clipper Alex Hebblethwaite gave the visitors a 2-1 lead through 20 minutes.

Shots on goal heavily favoured the visitors 17-5.

The Grizzlies extended their lead in the second period through a pair of goals to Landon Mackie for a 4-1 lead at the second intermission.

Goals came despite a good run of pressure from Nanaimo in the period, outshooting Victoria 18-9.

Teams traded goals in the first five minutes of the third period, Connor DeTurris notched his seventh of the year, however Victoria were never troubled and cruised to a 7-2 win.

Otto Nuto took the loss in net, stopping 32 of 39 Grizzlies shots.

The game was the Clippers’ final one before a two-week Christmas break for the team.

Next action is a double header in Prince George on Dec. 28 and 29.
