NANAIMO — A former local minor hockey product hopes to return to the same tournament but this time with a different result.

On Monday, Dec. 2 Hockey Canada announced the 32-player selection camp roster for the upcoming World Junior Hockey Championship (WJHC) in Ottawa, Ontario, which includes Nanaimo’s Matthew Wood.

The camp takes place between Dec. 10 and 13 in Ottawa.

Wood, a University of Minnesota forward, registered two goals and two assists in five games at last year’s WJHC in Gothenburg, Sweden where Canada finished in a disappointing fifth place.

Wood is one of seven players from last year’s team hoping to secure a position on the club.

So far this season Wood has four goals and 18 points in 16 games for the NCAA division one Gophers.

Wood has also represented Canada previously at a pair of under-18 world championships.

The 19-year-old Wood was selected in the first round, 15th overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.
