Thirteen-year-old boy injured after being hit by car along Departure Bay Rd.

NANAIMO — A teenage boy has suffered serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle along Departure Bay Rd.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Loat St. and Departure Bay Rd. around 2:15 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, after a 13-year-old boy was hit by a vehicle driving southbound up the hill.

Speaking at the scene, Cpt. Jason Battie with Nanaimo Fire Rescue said they don’t know the full extent of his injuries at this time.

“Looks like a 13-year-old male was struck by a vehicle. At this time, he has some injuries, he’s just been transported to NRGH. Don’t know the full details of the injuries…they’re fairly serious, he has multiple fractures.”

Battie said the boy was conscious when loaded into the ambulance.

Witnesses told NanaimoNewsNOW the boy was in the marked crosswalk at the time of the incident.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with police, as did multiple witnesses to the crash.

Traffic along Departure Bay. Rd is expected to be delayed for a brief period of time Friday afternoon, but there is currently no road closures in place.
