A new residential development is closer to construction after city council approved the next steps yesterday.
The Uchucklesaht Tribe plans to build 112 new units in townhouses and apartments on the former Redford School field.
At a recent hearing, 23 neighbours voiced their opposition to the project complaining about increased vehicle traffic and loss of views.
Mayor Sharie Minions said she’s experienced neighbourhood change because of development and said it’s good for the surrounding areas and the city as a whole.
“I recognize that it is a difficult change for people to see multi-family going into what has been traditionally a single-family neighbourhood,” she said. “I think it can be a very positive change and I think this is an area that it does make a lot of sense for, so I supported the application and council as a whole voted to pass it.”
Minions said City Planners have been working with the Uchucklesaht Development Corporation to address neighbourhood concerns about traffic and parking.
