Argyle alleys now one-way

City workers are painting directional signs near alleys on Argyle, from 6th Avenue down to Harbour Road.
Arrows painted on the pavement indicate the one-way direction for vehicles entering the narrow lanes.
City Manager of Operations Clint Wright says it’s a safety issue.
“If you’re trying to enter, or trying to approach Argyle off of those laneways, it’s next to impossible to see if there are pedestrians walking or cyclists, and the angled parking also makes it very difficult to safely enter Argyle,” he said. What we thought with it being the business district and with these new development proposals as well as the safety was to make it a one-way.”
Wright said there are increasing development proposals along Argyle, including discussions about a treed boulevard entending down from 10th Avenue.
The one-way rules won’t be enforced initially, and garbage trucks are exempt.
Wright said additional one-way signs will be posted as well.
