NANAIMO — Local Mounties, aided by specialized RCMP units, are conducting an investigation after a significant shooting Saturday night.

Just before 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, reports of shots being fired were made in the 4200 block of Corunna Ave., by Long Lake.

Staff Sgt. Darwin Tetreault told NanaimoNewsNOW responding officers found a single, adult man with considerable, life-threatening injuries.

“He was taken by air ambulance for major surgery and we’re conducting a shooting investigation. This was a targeted incident and the public is not in any danger.”

Tetreault was unable to provide a specific age of the victim but noted they’d had past interactions with him.

He said investigators are confident this is an isolated, targeted incident.

“They just know that there’s no danger to the public based on the backgrounds of some of the people who were there and what’s happened.”

Officers remained on scene on Sunday, Nov. 3 continuing to collect evidence.

“While there’s daylight out, nice and sunny, we’re trying to get as much evidence as we can. In talking with the investigators, there’s going to be a significant physical task that we have to conduct, we’re going to have to dismantle part of a deck to get to some evidence we’ve located there.”

RCMP Serious Crimes Unit are leading the investigation, with help from Police Dog Services and Integrated Forensic Identification Services.

General duty officers are canvassing the surrounding neighbourhood to collect evidence.

“We’re seeking the public’s assistance in the blocks around that neighbourhood with respect to doorbell cameras and/or reports of suspicious vehicles or persons, or any dash cam footage from about that time in that area.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250 754 2345.
