LANGLEY — For the second time in three years the VIU Mariners are PACWEST women’s soccer champions.

The Mariners won a tight 1-0 contest in the final on Sunday, Oct. 27 against Capilano. Jade Dillabough’s goal in the 35th minute was the only tally in the gold medal match.

VIU coach Bobbie Taylor was elated with the win.

“The game was an example of resilience, composure and persistance, and it all came together.”

The Mariners earned a bye into the tournament final thanks to an impressive 6-1-5 record in the regular season.

Next they’ll head back to the mainland for the CCAA nationals hosted by the Capilano Blues in Squamish starting on Nov. 6.

Taylor said they still want to work on a few things before the nationals begin.

“I think the game today was a great example of our game model but we also have to be more composed in the final third. We will be. We take every negative and turn it into a lesson. We’ll be working on that this week to keep moving forward.”

The PACWEST tournament awards prominently featured Mariners players with Jade Dillabough taking MVP honours and top forward.

Asuka Okabe was named the top midfielder, Mya Creed was the top defender and Dillabough was named VIU’s player of the match in the final game.
