Man injured in Nanaimo Island Hwy crash

NANAIMO — A motorcyclist sustained injuries following an apparent two-vehicle crash on the Island Hwy. in central Nanaimo Thursday afternoon.

It happened at about 3:10 p.m. near 107th St, just north of Country Club Centre.

Witness Cody Windsor was driving on the highway heading south at the time when he saw a northbound motorcyclist propelling toward him.

“I heard a bang and looked across and a biker was flying across the centre median and probably flew about 200 feet. I just pulled over and stopped to see if he was okay.”

The injured motorcyclist was conscious on scene in the highway’s southbound lanes and communicating with emergency responders.

While he didn’t see the collision itself, Windsor said it appeared the rider collided with a vehicle at the 107th St. Intersection.

Windsor swerved his truck off the highway to the right to avoid hitting the fallen rider.

“A bunch of people came from everywhere, from the Nissan dealership and across the road Trojan Collision came out as well and there was a nurse there helping out,” Windsor said.

The impacted section of the highway was closed temporarily in both directions, then northbound movement resumed.

As of 3:55 p.m. southbound Island Hwy. traffic between the Jingle Pot Rd./Norwell Dr intersection and 107th St. remained closed.
