One Bamfield man is confirmed dead and another presumed drowned after their trucks were sucked in to the Sarita River after it overflowed onto the Bamfield Main on Saturday.

Huu-ay-aht Chief Councillor John Jack identified the men as Ken Duncan, who lived in Bamfield and worked for the Huu-ay-aht Group of Businesses, and Bob Baden, a well-known community member and businessman in Bamfield who often engaged in community events.

Jack said Saturday’s rain was a once in many decades event and the road just couldn’t handle that much flooding and water, blaming climate change.

On the mainland, a 57-year-old elementary school teacher died after her home on the outskirts of Coquitlam was swept away by a mudslide.
