NANAIMO — The first real fall storm of the year is having some adverse effects on travel in the region.

BC Ferries announced they’ve cancelled sailings between Nanaimo’s Departure Bay and Horseshoe Bay in Vancouver for the remainder of Friday, Oct. 18 due to the weather.

Off the schedule are 5:55 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. sailings from Nanaimo, along with corresponding 6:35 p.m. and 10:10 p.m. crossings from Vancouver.

Travel between Duke Point, south of Nanaimo, and Tsawwassen is unaffected so far by the weather, although sailings are running around 30 minutes behind schedule due to earlier delays.

Those planning to travel Friday evening should visit the BC Ferries website for the latest on current conditions.

The company cited Environment Canada’s severe weather forecast with wind warnings in effect for eastern Vancouver Island from Nanoose Bay to Campbell River.

A special weather statement is in effect for areas from Nanaimo to Duncan, forecasting winds upwards of 70 to 90 kilometres per hour overnight.

Conditions are expected to persist through Saturday, Oct. 19 before tapering off Sunday, Oct. 20.
