QUALICUM BEACH — A 25-year-old man was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after an early morning collision in Oceanside.

Police, fire and paramedics were called out to Hwy. 19A, near Boorman Rd. and Widgeon Rd. around 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16 after a car travelling along the roadway hit a pedestrian.

Oceanside RCMP told NanaimoNewsNOW “the driver of the vehicle stopped and is cooperating with investigators. The pedestrian was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.”

Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with the BC Highway Patrol said in a statement the pedestrian is expected to survive.

“Early indications…are that the pedestrian ran into the roadway unexpectedly, there was no criminality involved, and the driver has been cooperative with police.”

Hwy. 19A remained closed for several hours Wednesday morning, re-opening around 11:30 a.m. as an RCMP collision analyst attended the scene.

Travellers in the area were diverted around the crash site.
