PARKSVILLE — One person was killed and another two people injured in a fatal collision in Coombs overnight.

The two vehicles collided on Hwy. 4 between Burbank Rd. and Hilliers Rd. around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, prompting a large response by emergency services and a closure of the highway which lasted into mid-Saturday morning.

Police say a Toyota Echo, driven by a 31-year-old Parksville man who died in the incident, lost control.

“The preliminary investigation has determined that a Toyota Echo traveling toward Parksville on Hwy. 4 crossed the centre line of the two-lane highway and collided with a Ford Focus traveling toward Port Alberni,” a statement from RCMP read.

Police note the Echo became engulfed in flames as a result of the crash.

The driver and passenger of the Focus were taken to hospital with what are considered non-life threatening injuries.

An investigation is continuing into the incident, including determining why the Echo crossed into oncoming traffic.

“At this time, speed and impairment have not been excluded as potential cause(s) in this collision,” RCMP say.

Oceanside RCMP officers are leading the investigation, in partnership with the RCMP’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service, along with the BC Coroners Service.
