NANAIMO — One person died following an accident at a central Nanaimo job site.

The BC Coroners Service (BCCS) confirmed the death after multiple emergency response crews responded to a construction project on Shenton Rd. on Wednesday, Sept. 25 just after 2 p.m.

“Because it’s an open investigation I’m unable to provide any more details,” Amber Schinkel with the BCCS told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue (NFR) crews responded with an aerial ladder truck in an apparent attempt to retrieve an individual from an upper floor of the four-storey mixed-use building currently under construction.

However, NFR crews were eventually stood down from the scene in the 3700 block of Shenton Rd.

WorkSafeBC confirmed officers with the agency attended the scene Wednesday afternoon and it had launched an investigation.

Neither Nanaimo RCMP or WorkSafeBC have provided a statement regarding the specific nature of the incident.
