Recognizable LADYSMITH vegetation feature spelled correctly after all

LADYSMITH — An apparent spelling error turned out to be a case of vegetation stubbornly not filling in as hoped.

A post to the popular Facebook page ‘Around Town – Ladysmith Community Board’ from a boater in Ladysmith Harbour pointed out what turned out to be an illusion more than anything else.

Vegetation near the shoreline of Ladysmith Transfer Beach Park appears to read ‘LADYSNITH’.

“It’s hard to do that kind of work and perhaps it grew in kind of funny,” picture-taker Treen MaColl told NanaimoNewsNOW, who was certain a spelling blunder had been made.

She emphasized that her post was not intended to be interpreted as malicious in any way.

Dozens of comments ensued from people, some poking fun at the apparent spelling faux pas.

Evidently, the angle at which MaColl took the picture contributed to the deception she and her husband observed while anchored out in the harbour following a boating trip.

The Town of Ladysmith’s communications and engagement specialist set the record straight, declaring Ladysmith is in fact spelled correctly.

“There was no misspelling of the word Ladysmith. The vegetation has not grown in as intended. This has caused the word to look misspelled from afar,” Nicholas Pescod informed NanaimoNewsNOW Tuesday afternoon.
