Workers rush to help man partially buried at Ladysmith construction site

LADYSMITH — A construction worker was airlifted to hospital after he became stuck under rubble in Ladysmith.

Ladysmith Fire Rescue (LFR) was called on the late afternoon of Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 4:40 p.m. to Rocky Creek Rd. near Ludlow Rd. for a confined space rescue at a construction site.

Chief Chris Geiger said one of their responding members found a man partially buried in a trench.

“A patient was located in a trench, and the trench had partially collapsed, entrapping his lower body. Some other workers from the construction site jumped in to dig him out.”

Geiger told NanaimoNewsNOW said efforts by the patient’s co-workers allowed LFR crews to carefully remove him from the trench, about 20 minutes after first receiving the call.

“The crew then transported the patient to Aggie Fields where a landing zone had been set up and an air ambulance was waiting. There was one aircrew, two ground crews and an ambulance supervisor and they stabilized the patient for air transport, and the air ambulance lifted off at (5:49 p.m.).”

Geiger said the victim suffered lower body injuries including a possible fractured leg.
