Sweet-toothed suspects sought for Nanaimo school break-in

NANAIMO — A recent local elementary school break-in resulted in a bizarre theft by thieves who apparently had a late night dessert craving.

Nanaimo RCMP said on Friday, Aug. 23 around 1 a.m. police received a call about a break-in at Rock City Elementary School on Departure Bay Rd.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said it appears access was gained through the roof.

“Once our members went inside they found that the kitchen door had been kicked open, and it appears the only item taken was some ice cream bars, so looks like they just had a sweet tooth because they didn’t touch computers, they didn’t touch any iPads, so the school got off quite easy on this one.”

An empty ice cream bar container was found nearby, while it doesn’t appear any other items were taken.

O’Brien said school officials are planning to reinforce the roof to prevent future break-ins.

Police hope people in the neighbourhood may have seen suspicious activity and can help advance their investigation.

O’Brien said their working theory is that it might be youths who may have been familiar with the school’s layout.

“It’s only a theory we’re working on, it’s probably kids, but they can be recognized…it’s a break and enter to a business, it’s a very serious criminal code offence, so we need to find out who is responsible and put a stop to it.”

Anyone with information into this case is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency number at 1-250-754-2345.
