‘Important part of the arts community:’ Nanaimo Fringe Festival returns with 10-day event

NANAIMO — A popular summer staple of music, comedy, and creative performing art is back.

The 14 annual Nanaimo Fringe Festival starts on Thursday, Aug. 8 and runs until Aug. 18, with both the Port Theatre (125 Front St.) and Black Rabbit Kitchen (321 Selby St.) featuring two stages for various performances.

Marketing coordinator Brayden Patrick said as usual, a wide variety of acts will be showcased this year.

“We’ve got a number of comedian acts, we’ve got a couple more serious, hard-hitting acts, we’ve got acts that will appeal to the whole family, and we’ve got a number of really awesome, diverse artists that are in this year’s festival.”

Performances will take place at the Port Theatre mains stage as well as the lobby, and Black Rabbit Kitchen will open their outdoor stage as well as their venue The Attic.

Also included this year is a performance by the Nanaimo Young People’s Theatre on Aug. 16 at The Attic, a mobile drama school for performers aged 4-17.

Patrick said while they limit the number of performers each year, their selection process is open to literally anyone who applies.

He said it’s a great opportunity to have lots of different voices heard.

“A lot of people really love the fact that it allows marginalized communities to step out and share their voice, and really speak their mind and show what they can do. It’s a really important part of the arts community in Nanaimo.”

A Fringe button, purchased for $5, is required as a “festival pass”, with all proceeds from the tickets shows going right back to the performers.

“That allows us to give 100 per cent of the ticket revenue to the artist. You purchase your button, that button’s good for the entire festival, and then you can purchase specific tickets for specific shows, and that revenue goes completely to the artist.”

Their free preview night where they’ll show five-minute teasers of each show happens Thursday, Aug. 8 at the Port Theatre main stage starting at 7 p.m.

More information can be found at nanaimofringe.com or on their Facebook page, while a guide to the festival can be found here.
