‘Trying to lift this back up:’ Snuneymuxw First Nation reviving Coast Salish Games

SNUNEYMUXW — Athletes and competitors from across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland are descending on the region for a long-overdue gathering.

The Coast Salish Games returns after a more-than decade long absence, with Snuneymuxw First Nation playing host to the week-long event, beginning Monday, July 22.

Organizer Kate Good told NanaimoNewsNOW it’s something which they’re excited to breathe new life into.

“In the past it was huge. It was something that took place every year and a different community would take it and host it. This particular event has been sitting idle for almost 14 years, so Snuneymuxw First Nation is taking that and trying to lift this back up again.”

Opening ceremonies will be held Monday at Rotary Bowl, with other events planning through the week including soccer, field lacrosse, basketball and track and field.

Also featured is the Lahal bone game, a traditional game of bluff involving two teams guessing where marked bones are located.

Good said events like the Coast Salish Games are excellent opportunities to connect with the wider community and share First Nation culture and practices.

“There’s been a lot of work that’s gone into planning the events with Snuneymuxw First Nation committee, as well as those with the City of Nanaimo, School District 68, Nanaimo Hospitality Association have all been a part of this.”

The Games lead into the annual Snuneymuxw Days, beginning Friday, July 26.

More events are planned including war canoe races held at The Point (Needham St. and Shoreline Dr.), as well as family-friendly activities and a vendor marketplace.
