Knife wielding attacker in Nanaimo stopped by dog walker’s martial arts training

NANAIMO — Local Mounties are looking for a man in his 30’s who allegedly tried to attack a dog walker with a pair of knives.

The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 11 at the Rotary Lookout Park at the end of of Northfield Rd., when a man walking his dog was confronted.

Police said the attacker swung two knives at the dog walker, attempting to stab him.

The man’s large-breed dog bit the attacker on the leg, while the dog walker used his martial arts training to “incapacitate” the attacker and get control of the knives.

A description provided by the dog walker, a 44-year-old local man, placed the attacker between 30 and 40 years old, Caucasian, wearing dark clothes and had a bra on his head at the time of the incident.

Police said the attacker left the area with a red suitcase and red mobility walker.

Searches by officers, including Police Dog Services, failed to locate him.

Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250 754 2345.
