Nuu-chah-nulth leaders are hopeful this week’s signing of the Haida Title Agreement could be the beginning of further rights recognition throughout BC.
Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council (NTC) president Judith Sayers says it’s a benefit to both sides to keep rights and title arguments out of the courts.
“I think the BC government is pretty open to finding options for First Nations for not spending all the time and the money it takes to go through the court system and bogging down the court system. It’s a very time-consuming process,” she said. ” It’s good to see that BC can do this I’m just wondering if they can do this for other First Nations as well?”
Sayers said the agreement between BC and the Haida Nation was relatively simple since ownership of Haida Gwaii was clear, but still took more than 20 years to achieve.
