City selects sign site

Apr 23, 2024 | 7:21 AM

A ‘Welcome to Port Alberni’ sign will finally be going up, a decade after the former wooden sign in front of the visitors centre was taken down.

The new sign will consist of a pair of trees and the silhouette of a bear in black steel, surrounding a rectangular sign welcoming people to Port Alberni.

The sign will be placed in front of Walmart at John Street and Johnson, which was decided upon yesterday by Mayor Sharie Minions and her council.

“The reason we’ve chosen that location is because it is the entrance to the city of Port Alberni,” she said. “We know that there’s some people who would like to see that at the visitor center, but it’s outside of the city of Port Alberni and we felt like there might not be the same ability to control what other signs may go there or if it would end up standing out or built into a cluster, so I’m looking forward to seeing that at Walmart in the coming months.”
