NANAIMO — One person was taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries after a rollover crash along the Nanaimo Parkway.

Emergency crews were called to the Parkway intersection with the southern end of Jingle Pot Rd. around 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 6 after reports of a truck in a ditch.

Acting capt. Mike Louie with Nanaimo Fire Rescue said on scene the truck was travelling northbound when it left the roadway.

“One man was extricated and off to NRGH [Nanaimo Regional General Hospital] with undetermined injuries. Another [person inside the truck] was out of the vehicle when we were on scene.”

Removal of the injured man from the truck’s cab was a difficult operation.

Louie said multiple engines responded, with firefighters forced to blaze a trail into the bush.

“We had to stabilize the vehicle initially. The male occupant had some undisclosed injuries that had to be brought out with a clamshell. We had multiple engines on scene, extricated the man and he was handed off to B.C. ambulance services.”

Louie said the location of the vehicle provided some “challenging obstacles” for rescuers to overcome.

Circumstances and contributing factors leading to the incident are under investigation by Nanaimo RCMP.

Tow trucks reported to the scene just before 9 a.m. with delays expected in the area while recovery of the vehicle is underway.
