Crews complete Village Way Path project on Gabriola Island

NANAIMO — A key pedestrian pathway project along a busy stretch of road on Gabriola Island is complete.

A contractor on behalf of the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) paved 850 meters of gravel path on North Rd. between Huxley Community Park and Tin Can Alley.

Known as Village Way Path, a statement from the RDN said the project was done at the end of March.

The path is two meters wide.

…“ it includes a section of permeable asphalt where the path goes through a stand of trees in front of the Gabriola Elementary school. The permeable pavement will allow for water to infiltrate below the path and minimize the impacts of the construction on the adjacent trees,” outlined a statement from the RDN.

The project was delivered within the $265,000 budget, which completes a 1.5 kilometre link between Gabriola’s village core and the northwestern entrance to the expansive 707 Community Park.

Construction of the path project started in 2020, involving a retaining wall and gravel base on the north side of North Rd. to guide the full length of the path corridor.

Improvements to the roadside shoulder were included in the project to provide space for cyclists.
