IHS want trains back on track

Alberni’s famous trains can’t leave the roundhouse until two crossings are repaired.
The Western Vancouver Island Industrial Heritage Society wants to restore some form of train service, but at this point can’t even get to the station.
Mayor Sharie Minions says the city will post a request for proposals for crossing repairs.
“So today council directed that staff work on request proposals to get the crossing work done,” she said. “There’s an initial cost estimate of roughly $145,000, however that is a preliminary number and we think it could be lower. It also could be higher with further information, so that’s why council hasn’t made a decision yet, because we just don’t have enough accurate information in front of us.”
Minions said the city and IHS are hoping to offer community focussed short train rides using the diesel locomotive and speeder.
“So that would be a community focussed short run of the train something really probably for families to enjoy different weekends like the Santa train and maybe not this year, but going forward an Easter train or things like that,” she said. “So not a long ride out to McLean Mill, something affordable for the community and for families to enjoy, and with a minimal subsidy from the city.”
