Explosive found during Sooke Crash, two people arrested

Mar 22, 2024 | 12:53 PM

SOOKE — RCMP in Sooke say two people are in custody after a crash led to the discovery of an explosive device.

Island District RCMP said in a statement that officers responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision on East Sooke Rd. on Friday, March 22 where an injured woman was found on scene.

It says the male driver ran off before police arrived, then they learned an explosive device was linked to the woman hurt in the crash.

“Due to the unknown nature of that explosive device, Sooke RCMP contacted the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit for their assistance and the safe removal of that device,” RCMP said in a news release.

The Mounties say shortly after the crash they received another report that a security guard had been attacked nearby, and a truck stolen in a separate incident.

An officer patrolling the area spotted the stolen truck down an embankment, and the driver, believed to be the same man who left the first crash, was arrested for theft and assault with a weapon.

The two vehicles involved were seized for forensic analysis, while traffic in the area was temporary closed for investigative purposes.
