NANAIMO — An 80-year-old woman has died after being hit by a vehicle at Woodgrove Centre.

The incident occurred Thursday, March 21 just after 1:30 p.m. in the parking lot by the Nanaimo Walmart, when the woman was struck by a passing blue Dodge pickup truck.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said driver, a 21-year-old, stopped immediately and remained at the scene, cooperating with police.

“It was witnessed by several people, they called in the incident. The injuries were catastrophic [to the victim] and the individual died at the scene.”

Nanaimo Fire Rescue, B.C. Emergency Health Services and Nanaimo RCMP all attended the scene, but they were unable to revive the woman.

Police have ruled out drugs and alcohol as contributing factors on behalf of the driver.

It’s still unclear the exact nature of the incident and how the truck and woman came into contact.

O’Brien added the vehicle was seized and will undergo a mechanical inspection, to determine whether its condition played a role in the crash.

“It’s too early to say, there may be some issues with the truck but that will come out during the mechanical inspection.”

Police are looking to speak with anyone who witnessed the incident, or who captured the incident on dash cam or other video.

O’Brien added supports are available for those affected.

“If anybody witnesses this, it could be very impactive, they could be disturbed for several days. They don’t need to suffer alone, please call RCMP Victim Services and we will assist them.”

Those with information can call 250 754 2345, quoting file number 2024-8703.

Walmart remained open during the incident, with a section of the parking lot closed off to traffic.
