Pay parking coming to areas around Nanaimo hospital

NANAIMO — Pay parking is expanding around Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

In a bid to ease congestion and demand for parking around the hospital grounds, the City of Nanaimo plans to implement pay parking on select streets beginning April 1.

Setup and payment will be identical to pay parking requirements in the downtown, with drivers registering their vehicle license plate number at parking kiosks or via an app.

“This responds to the growing street parking challenges faced by residents and visitors to the hospital and businesses and surrounding areas,” the City noted in a release.

Coins and credit cards will be accepted along with Apple Pay, Google Pay and Visa Debit methods.

Costs will be consistent with downtown parking, at $1.25 per hour, and pay parking rates will be in effect Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Like in the downtown, evenings and weekends will be free.

Affected areas include the hospital side of both Boundary Ave. and Dufferin Cres.

Free two-hour parking will remain in place along selections of Dufferin Cres. not immediately bordering the hospital grounds while nearby residents will be exempt from the two-hour limit in other areas neighbouring the hospital.

The City said revenues from the paid parking will support parking-related projects and maintaining associated infrastructure.

While pay parking in the affected areas will commence on April 1, the City said full enforcement of the new measures will not start until April 8.
