Wintry weather, heavy snow shut down two major highways in B.C.’s Interior

HOPE, B.C. — Heavy snowfall and winter storm conditions have shut down high-elevation stretches of a pair of major highways in the British Columbia Interior.

The Ministry of Transportation’s DriveBC information system says the Coquihalla Highway between Merritt and Hope is closed until further notice.

Webcam photos and images on social media show the highway blanketed by heavy snow accumulation near Coquihalla Summit.

DriveBC says Highway 1 between Revelstoke and Golden also remains closed due to high avalanche risk along the mountainous route, and no detour is available.

Environment Canada says warnings remain in place for both routes, in addition to Highway 3 between Hope and Princeton and between Grand Forks and Creston, as well as Highway 16 from Tete Jaune Cache to the Alberta border.

The weather agency says the Pacific frontal system behind the winter storm has dropped 57 centimetres of snow in Whistler, up to 60 centimetres at the Sea to Sky Highway and 32 centimetres at Coquihalla Summit.
