‘Kids have an innate curiosity:’ Nanaimo Science taking over Country Club Centre

NANAIMO — An ever-expanding showcase of science and the world around us is taking over a local shopping centre.

‘Science Sunday’ runs at Country Club Centre on Sunday, Feb. 25 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., featuring over 30 non-profit organizations and science-based groups from across Vancouver Island.

The event is run by Nanaimo Science, with executive director Elaine Parker telling NanaimoNewsNOW it’s about a celebration of science.

“We know that kids have an innate curiosity, they may be excited about dinosaurs or have a little rock collection or interested in stars, chemistry. What we try and do is showcase all the amazing organizations and opportunities to engage with science that we have here in our community.”

Events include various slideshows, animal demonstrations, labs and the opportunity to see a live-scanning electron microscope.

Last year just under 1,000 people attended the event, which was also the first year it was hosted at Country Club Centre.

Previous years saw Nanaimo Science setup at local elementary schools.

“Since we’ve moved to Country Club Centre, it has become enormous, we have so much more space and so many more connections we’re able to share with families.”

Tickets, paid in cash, are $5 per person, or families can pay a $20 flat rate. Children under the age of two are free.

Money raised goes back into programming run by Nanaimo Science, including home and school setups, camps and after school clubs.

Parker also said a big part of their program schedule are free ‘Science in the Park’ events through the summer months.

More information on the event is available on the Nanaimo Science website.

Plenty of interactive displays and demonstrations will be on hand Sunday at Country Club Centre. (Nanaimo Science)
