Pair of fourplexes to provide affordable housing options for Snuneymuxw First Nation

NANAIMO — A pair of fourplexes are being built for Snuneymuxw First Nation (SFN) this year, promising homes for those with low to moderate incomes.

Two, wood-frame fourplexes are planned to be built on Warpath Rd., thanks to a partnership between SFN, and the provincial and federal governments.

The on-reserve housing complex, called ‘La’lum’utul’, which means “care for one another”, will be a mix of one, two, three, and four-bedroom units.

SFN chief Mike Wyse said they are dedicated to finding housing solutions to meet the needs of their members.

“Our partnership with the National Housing Co-Investment Fund represents an important step in addressing the urgent need for housing in our community.”

The new units are the results of a partnership between SFN, BC Housing, and the federal Canada Mortgage Housing Association.

The province contributed approximately $1.4 million to the project, with the federal government contributing $480,000, with SFN providing the land, valued at $837,000.

Minister of housing Ravi Kahlon said they want to ensure people have affordable housing options in their community.

“Under our Homes for People action plan, we’re allowing people to remain in their communities, connected to their families and their culture. Our government is proud to work alongside Snuneymuxw First Nation on this project and we will continue to work with Indigenous partners to build on- and off-reserve housing.”

The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year and will be operated by SFN.
