NANAIMO — A driver luckily sustained only minor injuries after losing control of his car and toppling a traffic light.

It happened on Thursday, Jan 18 at about 6:50 a.m. on Rutherford Rd. at Hammond Bay Rd.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue Capt. Orphee Bernard said the 27-year-old driver luckily was not seriously hurt.

“Someone may have hit an icy patch coming down Rutherford Rd. and went through the intersection, over the bank and into some wires for a hydro pole and took out a traffic light,” Bernard told NanaimoNewsNOW.

After hitting the traffic light, the Toyota Camry was partially suspended in the air from the hydro lines, likely preventing a more serious crash with numerous mature trees several feet away.

Arrangements were made for a technical retrieval of the vehicle.

BC Hydro was contacted to repair the damaged power line, while the flattened traffic light will also have to be replaced.

Traffic delays at the intersection are anticipated on Thursday.

Bernard said this crash highlights the importance of driving cautiously.

“Definitely, just drive according to conditions,” he said.
