NANAIMO — One person is in custody following an early morning assault in south Nanaimo on New Year’s Day.

Nanaimo RCMP say they were called on Monday, Jan. 1 shortly after 7 a.m. to the 300 block of Tenth St. to check on a man in medical distress due to an alleged assault.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Mike Thompson said when police arrived, they located one man with significant injuries.

“Officers located a male who had been allegedly assaulted and was suffering from serious but non-life-threatening injuries. At this point, investigators have been able to identify that the victim in this particular case was located in the 300 block of Tenth St.”

The victim was treated on scene by paramedics and then transported to Nanaimo hospital

A number of emergency crews were on-scene at the DBL Disposal Services yard (333 Tenth St.) the morning of Tuesday, Jan 2.

Multiple RCMP officers were staged in front of the disposal yard on Tuesday, which was closed as a result of an ongoing investigation.

The Nanaimo RCMP Serious Crimes Unit (SCU) has taken over the investigation and is executing search warrants on the site.

“The public should be aware that they will likely see an increased police presence in the area while the investigation continues”, Thompson said.

A single suspect remains in custody, and the RCMP say there is no risk to the public and they are not seeking any further suspects at this time.

RCMP were unable to confirm where the assault took place or if there was a connection between the victim and the suspect.

More information is expected from police as the investigation advances.
