Christmas rockslide hits Highway 4

Highway 4 re-opened at 2:30 yesterday afternoon following a rockslide shortly after 6pm on Christmas Day.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, two large rocks dislodged from the side of the bluff near Angel Rock, hit the rockfall barrier and fell into the travel lanes.

Some trees were also dislodged but there were no injuries.

At first light yesterday, a geotechnical assessment was completed and maintenance contract crews were subsequently cleared to begin cleanup and replace the roadside barrier.

The rockfall occurred adjacent to the area affected by wildfires during the summer.

The BC Transportation Ministry told travellers there was no detour available during the closure.

Shelter space for stranded travellers was made available at the Qualicum Civic Centre and at the Hospitality Inn on Redford

Meanwhile, Head Bay Road east of Tahsis was also closed for a day and reopened at about 4:30 p.m. yesterday.
