Motorist loses control of truck, damages two Nanaimo homes

Dec 21, 2023 | 11:56 AM

NANAIMO — A truck barreled over a sidewalk, down a small drop-off and onto a lawn, causing damage to a pair of homes on Nanaimo’s Rock City Rd.

It happened on Wednesday, Dec. 20 at about 1:40 p.m. on Rock City Rd. near Departure Bay Rd.

Witness Christian Friars said he was visiting family members nearby when the incident occurred.

“I saw some guy say his brakes weren’t very good, so he came ripping down here into somebody’s lawn, hit a beam and crashed into a house,” the 12-year-old Friars told NanaimoNewsNOW.

He checked with the driver to make sure he was okay when the motorist made the comment about issues with his brakes.

Friars called 911 and remained on scene.

Police confirmed the incident, stating a 37-year-old man was the driver.

Investigators determined the vehicle made a left turn onto Rock City Rd. at a high rate of speed and crashed near the home, damaging two pillars and the front yard of one house, along with the trailer, fence and siding of another home.

There were no signs of impairment and the driver declined medical attention.

He is facing tickets under the Motor Vehicle Act as a result of the incident.

Aside from a chewed-up front lawn, the home in the path of the truck after it propelled off Rock City Rd. sustained damage in the carport area where the truck’s canopy was torn off.

The truck came to rest several feet away against the siding of the neighbouring house.

No injuries were reported from the incident which occurred around the corner from Rock City Elementary School.

Ryan is a postal carrier who was in the area at the time.

“All I saw was the vehicle just kind of disappear and now that I walk up here I can see that it went right up over the bank really quick”

He said the truck losing control caused a loud bang noise heard throughout the area.
