NANAIMO — Local Mounties are continuing to investigate the circumstances which led up to a single vehicle incident early Saturday morning.

Emergency crews were called to Nanaimo River Rd., near the Nanaimo Lake Deadwood campground, around 15 kilometres west of Hwy. 1, around 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16.

Cst. Mike Thompson told NanaimoNewsNOW first responders were alerted to the situation by a passing motorist who saw the vehicle, but it’s currently unclear exactly when the incident occurred.

“A big part of that is actually part of the ongoing investigation is being taken on by the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services, in cooperation with the BC Coroners Service. They’re the ones who will be attempting to determine the time this took place, as well as the cause.”

It was reported by the witness the vehicle had rolled during the incident.

Emergency crews were also challenged accessing the scene, due to the remote nature.

Thompson was unable to provide details on the victims including gender or hometowns, nor the make and model of the vehicle, citing the ongoing investigation.

Investigators remained on scene a majority of Saturday, and were due to clear the scene by around 8 p.m.

Nanaimo River Rd. was closed throughout the day as emergency crews worked, with Thompson saying there was some road rehabilitation work which needed to be done as a result of the incident.

Thompson said the area is obviously very rural, and they’re trying to establish a clear series of events through the morning hours.

‘It is a very rural area, so the Nanaimo RCMP is requesting the public’s assistance if they were driving through the area, if they could give us a bit of a timeline if they were going through with dashcam footage.”

Anyone with information or footage is asked to contact the local detachment at 250 754 2345.

No foul play is suspected and the B.C. Coroners Service has assumed control of the investigation.
