Beaufort area director Fred Boyko said the district should lift the ban, and instead support strategies to encourage etiquette among all trail users.
“Wheels yield to heels,” he said. “ATVs, dirt bikes and side-by-sides yield to all users. Bicycle riders yield to hikers and others. Everyone yields to horseback riders. It’s one sentence as it’s about as straight-forward as you can get.”
After a year of workshops, meetings and studies, it was estimated that fully half of trail users were ATV riders, and were using the regional park trails despite the prohibition.
The ACRD will look into reducing spending on trail maintainance, while still funding signage and bridges.
